Kniha, ktorú som si kúpila na Vianoce po roku čakania. Strávila so mnou na Erasme 5 mesiacov. V lietadle, doma v posteli po pretancovanej noci, neskôr na pláži zápasiac s vetrom a pieskom(dnes som spomedzi jej stran vysypala doma celú dunu). Kniha ženská, svieža, všímavá, inteligentná, plnokrvná... Neskutočne dobrá v mnohých ohľadoch. Čakala som veľa a dostala viac. Absynt, teším sa na ďalšie knižky.
Amerikána nie je žiadny ťažkopádny spoločenský román. Už dávno som nečítala nič také vyvážené – literatúru, ktorá sa venuje veľkým témam, ale zároveň to robí s ľahkosťou komerčného page turneru.

Kniha je podľa niekoľkých recenzií príliš dlhá a mohla by stratiť ~100 strán bez ujmy na kvalite.
Záver niektorým čitateľom prišiel nedotiahnutý alebo príliš „prikrášlený/forced“.
Niektoré vedľajšie postavy (najmä Obinze) pôsobia menej rozvinuto.
Vložené blogové pasáže či niektoré momenty niekomu pripadali miestami prehnané.
Pacila sa mi tema, obsah aj forma knihy. Hlavna hrdinka je nedokonala, takze jej spravanie je uveritelne a o to viac mi bola sympaticka. Okrem vaznejsich tem ako rasizmus v Amerike, rozdiel medzi americkymi a neamerickymi cernochmi, imigrantov v Europe, sa mi pacilo, ze autorka opisovala aj obycajne ludske problemy cernosiek s vlasmi a laskou. Kniha mi rozsirila obzory a kazdopadne si este nieco precitam.

Geniálna, vysnívaná kniha.
Na túto knihu som natrafila náhodou v kníhkupectve Martinus, priala som si nájsť naozaj dobré čítanie na letné prázdniny. Zaujal ma ružový obal a Autorka o ktorej som vedela, že napísala knihu (Všetci by sme mali byť...). Táto kniha je skvelo napísaná, slovník je veľmi bohatý, plus som sa nevedela od nej odtrhnúť. Autorka je intelektuálka a jej príbeh Amerikánky je jeden z najúprimnejších ženských príbehov modernej doby aké som doteraz čítala. Odporúčam všetkými 20timi.
Dievča z Afriky ktoré sa dostalo do Ameriky. Bez pátosu a bez pozlátky. Vlastnými silami. Akurát v dobe kedy kandidoval Barack Obama. O vybudovaní si silného zázemia. Štúdiu a pocitu, že doma je len doma. A popri tom sa odohráva cesta aj jej priateľa do Anglicka. Taktiež vlastnými silami, no menej úspešne. Preto jediná možná cesta bol návrat domov. Kniha krásne napísaná ale ťažko zdokumentovaná na pár viet. Určite siahnem aj po druhej autorkynej knihe.
Tento mimoriadny román ponúka pohľad do duše feministky a navyše černošky a prináša nám príbeh o skúsenosti s diskrimináciou ako by sme si ju sami nedokázali predstaviť. Vďaka príbehu Ifemelu a ľudí z jej okolia máme možnosť spoznať ako žijú nigérijčania v rôznych kútoch sveta. Veľmi dobre sa číta, nenechajte sa odradiť väčším počtom strán.

This novel, together with Homegoing from Yaa Gyasi, taught me more about racism and slavery than all of my history classes in high school and university combined.
Americanah is piercing, Americanah is emotional, Americanah is a book that made me forget the world around me.
So what was it about? Let me borrow Ifemelu’s thought, with which I wholeheartedly agree - “Why did people ask “What it is about?” as if a novel had to be about only one thing?”
Americanah is the quote’s living proof. Ranging from racism, immigration, politics, through family relationships and mental illness, all the way to the questions of identity and the importance of reading, the book is a breathtaking rollercoaster that takes you across continents to discover what you are made of.
While not a love story per se, Adichie leverages a relationship between Ifemelu and Obinze as a framework which allows her to examine all the above mentioned topics from several different angles.
The one that gave me the most was definitely the topic of race. Never before have I understood how the concept comes into being (“I didn't think of myself as black until I left Nigeria”), and never before have I even come to think of the possible sourness between the American Blacks and the Non-American Blacks (“Well, if you all hadn’t sold us, we wouldn’t be talking about any of this.”). Even though the blog inserts have been marked by other reviewer as exaggerated, I loved them, as it was thanks to their provocative character they resonated so deep within me, made me stop reading, and forced me to formulate my own opinion about the topic at hand.
I also closely related with the underlying question of identity. How does our native environment shape who we are, and once we move to a new continent or culture, do we also change with it? Where do we truly belong, and how much should we succumb to the external pressures for the sake of fitting in?
Adichie described the life of people seeking a better future in an unfamiliar place with so much vivid detail and Ifemelu showed so much realistic introspection, that somewhere halfway through the book I started to suspect it is more of an autobiography rather than anything else. Her bittersweet insights, her conflicting thoughts, the nitty-gritty situations she stumbled upon, they made the whole reading experience come to life. Just thinking back to the hair-braiding salon, Ifem’s “discovery” of reading in the university library, or the election of Obama, I felt as though I was right there in the room, living through it all.
Not to mention that the prose itself is a true masterpiece. Same as with Purple Hibiscus, Adichie crafts sentences that transport you halfway across the world and make feel at home in places you have never visited before. Same as Obinze, sometimes I felt that the text “is like poetry.”
At the end, I didn’t give the book full five stars for two reasons.
Firstly, there was a slight lack of personality in Obinze, as well as all the other side characters. Possibly everyone apart from Ifemelu herself, and maybe Aunty Uju and Dike, felt a bit as a one-dimensional caricature embodying pre-defined personality traits. The characters lacked life, and especially with Obinze, Curt and Blaine, they made Ifem’s relationships and interactions less tangible, less believable.
Secondly, I disliked the ending. Apart from curiously introducing a whole new set of irrelevant characters discussing irrelevant topics, the end of the storyline felt a bit too forced and fairytale like, taking away the whole realistic feel of the book.
Nevertheless, even despite this, Americanah remains for me a highlight of this year that helped me create a new lens through which to understand the world around me.

I have listened to this book for the first time as an audiobook, and loved it so much I wanted to have a hard copy at home. Therefore, I cannot export my highlights, so instead I am sharing my favourite quotes below:

Americká je vynikajúca. Jedna z najlepších kníh, ktoré som, kedy čítala. Úžasne ukazuje, čo je feminizmus. Páči sa mi časť ako si Ifemelu uvedomuje, že v Amerike je čierna pokožka niečo iné ako v Nigérii. Jedna z častí, ktoré nesú posolstvo a nie jediná

Silný príbeh, zaujímavý pre mňa ako ženu v podobnom veku ako autorka/hlavná postava. Jednu hviezdičku som dala dole v podstate kvôli prekladu - relatívne pravidelne mi tam zaškrípali výrazy či slovné spojenia doslova preložené z angličtiny, na môj vkus znejúce dosť neprirodzene, hlavne pri replikách malého synovca. Ale pokiaľ viem, prekladala to mladá baba, takže každopádne klobúk dole pred ňou :)

Kniha napisana krasnym stylom!
Uz davno som necitala tak dobre napisanu knihu. Styl pisania, ktory je premysleny a v ktorom kazda metafora ma svoje miesto, kazde slovo je sprave vybrane, ma potesil najma preto, ze v poslednej dobe som mala pocit, ze moderna literatura je pisana rychlym stylom, ktory clovek po precitani knihy okamzite zabudne a pri ktorom ma clovek pocit, ze to vlastne mohol rovnako dobre (zle) aj sam.
Pribeh a politicke diane, o ktorom Chimamanda Ngozi pise, je nesmierne zaujimave a myslim, ze zaujme hlavne ludi, ktori zili nejaky cas v zahranici. Jej postrehy o rase vysvetluju velmi vela. Ani na sekundu som nemala pocit, ze niektore momenty su pritiahnute za vlasy, ako som citala v niektorych komentaroch. Autorka si ich vsetky odzila...
Knihu naozaj odporucam!
