Jules Gabriel Verne (1828-1905) was a French author and a pioneer of the science-fiction genre. His novels include Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1869-70), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873), all available in Penguin Classics.
David Coward is Emeritus Professor of French at the University of Leeds. He is the author of studies of Marcel Pagnol, Marguerite Duras, Marivaux and Restif de la Bretonne, and of a History of French Literature (2002). He has translated numerous French classics, including Molière's plays, Simenon's novels and Albert Cohen's Belle du Seigneur, for which he was awarded the Scott-Moncrieff prize in 1996.

Jules Verne (* 8. február 1828, Nantes – † 24. marec 1905, Amiens) bol francúzsky spisovateľ sci-fi žánru. Jeho knihy sú dodnes obľúbené hlavne medzi mládežou. Detstvo Julesa Verna je spojené s ostrovom Feydau uprostred Loiry, kde vyrástol, mal kamarátov a kde prežíval dobrodružné snové cesty. Strýko Châteaubourg, ktorý bol maliarom, tieto chlapčenské sny podporoval. Jules ho navštevoval s mladším bratom Paulom. Strýko mal albumy s vlastnými kresbami z krajín, ktoré spoznal a tieto malého Julesa veľmi zaujímali. Roku 1839 v lete sa Jules nechal najať ako plavčík na trojsťažník Coralia do Indie, jeho rodičia to však zistili a zabránili mu odísť. Verne vyštudoval právo a potom sa živil ako obchodník s akciami. 10. januára 1857 sa oženil s Honorinou Hébé Morelovou, s ktorou mal syna Michela. Ten po jeho smrti dopísal rozpísané diela. V roku 1862 sa zoznámil s nakladateľom Pierrom Julom Hetzelom, ktorý jediný zo všetkých parížskych vydavateľov sa rozhodol vydať jeho dielo Päť týždňov v balóne. Ponúkol mu zaňho 10 000 frankov, na vtedajšie pomery slušnú čiastku. Román mal obrovský úspech, preto Hetzel uzavrel s autorom exkluzívnu zmluvu na 20 rokov, v ktorej sa Verne zaviazal, že napíše dva romány ročne za honorár 20 000 frankov (10 000 frankov za jeden). Táto zmluva ho finančne zaistila a umožnila mu živiť sa iba písaním. Hetzel bol s Vernem ako autorom spokojný, keďže mu zabezpečoval nadštandardné príjmy a preto mu honorár postupne zvyšoval. Päťkrát zmenil zmluvu, takže si Verne mohol kúpiť vilu a jachtu. Verne veľa cestoval navštívil severoafrické pobrežie, Baltské more, USA, Rusko, atď.
