George Orwell, vlastním jménem Eric Arthur Blair, se narodil v rodině britského úředníka v Indii. Po středoškolských studiích získal prospěchové stipendium na elitní soukromé škole. Toto prostředí mu nevyhovovalo, a proto odešel do Barmy, kde v letech 1922-1927 pracoval u policie. Barmu opustil znechucen rasovými a společenskými přehradami a v letech 1928-1930 žil raději mezi nejchudšími vrstvami v Anglii a Francii. Aktivně se účastnil španělské občanské války a byl v ní zraněn. Během druhé světové války působil jako redaktor BBC. Od roku 1938 trpěl tuberkulózou, na kterou také zemřel.
